Parowan Safari

We left Bay area early Friday afternoon heading to Truckee to pick up the gliders (Matt’s LS4 & my club’s G102) on our way to Parowan. By the time we picked up the gliders and hit the road again it was 6:30PM.

We hit I-50 shortly after and started to realize why they call it “The loneliest road in America”!  After hours of driving on I-50, we probably saw less than a dozen cars.  The good news was that pulling over was easy, we just had to stop in the middle of the road!

The plan was to stop at Austin for the night. But after arriving in Austin, to our surprise, we found out that all of the three motels in town were booked!  After a bit of poking around, we realized we picked the only weekend in the year that the town is completely full of visitors due to “Gridley Day”! We had a hearty meal consisting of a frozen burrito-like main course and a bag of chips from the Chevron gas station and hit the road again heading to Eureka. While waiting for our dinner to warm up, Matt noticed an interesting flyer on the wall asking residents with cancer that lived in the area in the 50’s to call an 800 number for possible compensation!  Hard to imagine what was going on in the minds of folks in charge of nuclear testing back in the 50’s...

We had better luck finding a place to stay in Eureka and after about 12 hours of driving were more than ready to retire for the night.

Drive to Parowan - Day 1
